See Shaft early and free

It would be lazy of me to just put the lyrics to the Shaft song in here and then the link, right? Fine, I'll say some words or whatever. They've made yet another Shaft movie, and I'm not even sure what the hell they're thinking with th...

Review: The Secret Life of Pets 2

The first The Secret Life of Pets was a big hit, not only because it functioned as a children's movie but because it had lots of fluffy animals that could be turned into toys and then bought by children. You have to keep the momentum g...

See 5B early and free

5B seems like a very interesting documentary. It's about the nurses who first cared for AIDS patients in the 80s when the epidemic was its height. That's a big, brave thing to do considering the misinformation that abounded about the d...

See the Dead Don't Die early and free

Jim Jarmusch is a director that basically does whatever the hell he wants and turns it into magic. Evidently, the next thing he wanted to do was make a zombie movie with a bunch of famous people. So he did. And now it's something we can wat...

See Late Night early and free

We've already been shouting from the cinematic hilltops about how good Late Night is but we figured we'd give you a chance to see for yourself with some passes to a special screening of the film. The comedy, which stars Mindy Kaling an...

Godzilla stomps the box office but not as hard as he could

While the amount of monsters in Legendary's burgeoning Godzilla franchise may be growing the box office returns seem to be dwindling. While Godzilla: King of the Monsters won the weekend with a domestic pull of $49 million it came in w...

The Goldfinch gets its first emotional trailer

The Goldfinch might me one of my most anticipated dramas of this year. While I haven't read the Pulitzer-prize winning book the film is based on, the fact that it's directed by John Crowley with Cinematography by Roger Deakins pr...

Review: Brightburn

There's an interesting concept behind Brightburn. We take the Superman myth and instead of him being instilled with good morals by two wonderful Kansans he turns out evil instead. There's so much to unpack in that concept. Debates about nat...

Everything about the new Star Trek: Picard trailer is good

CBS may have lost a ton of fans with the lackluster second season of Star Trek: Discovery but that doesn't mean they're going to stop making Star Trek shows, and they know one way to get fans slobbering is to bring back Captain Jean L...

I've never seen There Will Be Blood and I'm not proud of it

(Editor's Note: After discovering the movies that the staff hasn't watched they've all been fired. We will rebuild with people who actually enjoy watching movies.) We've all got that movie right? The one that we keep saying we're going to w...

Terminator: Dark Fate goes hunting in first trailer

Well, if you're going to reignite excitement over a franchise that I'd struggle to still call a franchise at this point this trailer is the way to do it. Taking the cliche tactic of playing a slow, dramatic cover of a song over an action m...

See Godzilla: King of the Monsters early and free

I would not have guessed that as the MCU comes to a close the cinematic universe I am most excited to dive into would be the Godzilla/King Kong one, but here we are. After years of trying to make Godzilla work as a Western blockbuster they'...

The inevitable John Wick 4 has been confirmed

If you've seen the end of John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum then you know that it wasn't really the end. In fact, I'd argue the film was much akin to Infinity War in that it set up the greater conflict to come and felt more like ...

John Wick 3 finally gives Lionsgate a win with $57 million

People really like to see Keanu Reeves shoot/stab/punch people in the head repeatedly as John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum pulled in $57 million this weekend, beating out expectations and landing a massive box office for an R-rated fi...

The Tick cancelled by Amazon after season 2

Damn it. Stupid streaming services.  Amazon today announced that The Tick, the latest television adaptation of the classic comic series, will not be picked up for a third season. As for reasons, they listed a hatred of darkly comic TV ...

Review: John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

When John Wick was first announced it wasn't that clear that the franchise would be anything special. After all, Keanu Reeves had made plenty of action films before that of varying quality, and elderly action hero coming back for reven...

Saw franchise to reboot through spin-off from Chris Rock

I'm not really sure how to tackle this it's so out of left field, but the Saw franchise is about to get a spin-off/relaunch film developed by Chris Rock. Yea, that Chris Rock. Evidently, the actor came to Lionsgate with an idea for the...

Season 3 of The Orville won't warp in until 2020

We learned over the weekend the incredibly awesome news that The Orville will be getting a third season. Everyone was very excited. Well, all the smart people that watch the show because it's the true spiritual successor to all things ...

See Booksmart early and free

We got to check out Booksmart hella early at SXSW and pretty much loved it. The film is smart and interesting and basically a new take on Superbad. Can't get much more of a recommendation than that, but if you don't trust us for some r...

Review: The Hustle

My recommendation for seeing The Hustle? Just rent the original, which is a remake itself. The Hustle, despite its name change and gender swapping, is often a shot-for-shot remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I thought it was strange that th...

Batwoman teaser is all about dat cape

Normally I'd open up with some quip about the most recent happenings in the CW's Arrowverse (do we have to rename it now), but I am so far behind on all the shows that I barely know what's going on. I mean, I know that Batwoman is joining ...

See The Hustle early and free

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is comedy royalty. Still one of the funniest movies you can ever watch, a remake/reboot is a risky ask. The Hustle is going for it, and I'm hoping it can live up to its predecessor. It's a bit of a strange ...

About Matthew Razakone of us since 2:16 AM on 02.17.2011

Matthew Razak is the Editor-in-Chief here at Flixist, meaning he gets to take credit for all this awesome even though its really the rest of the amazing staff that gets it done. He started as a community member back in the early days of Destructoid and bugged his way into writing for the site while being the Managing Editor over at That VideoGame Blog. He was also writing as a film critic for a local newspaper in the DC area and for Examiner.com. Finally after seven years of thinking silently to himself why the Modern Method network doesn't have a movie site he told Niero that we should start one. At the same time Fronz had been telling him to start a movie site too. The two of them teamed up with Niero's go ahead and now we have Flixist.

Matthew is totally open to any movie of any genre, but his wheelhouse is horror, action and James Bond. Doesn't sound too respectable but he's also got a fancy film degree from Vassar College and he's a member of the Washington Area Film Critics Society so that makes him semi-official in some capacity. He just really like movies and hopes that's enough to let you trust his opinion on them slightly.

He get asked these questions a lot when he tells people he writes for a movie blog, so:

Favorite movie: Evil Dead 2

Favorite franchise: Bond

OK, Favorite Bond movie: From Russia With Love

Movie You Should See Right Now: Midnight in Paris

Movies You Should See You Haven't: 16 Blocks, Lucky Number Slevin, Superman Returns (but watch it as an homage to the first two films and not as a movie, it's genius that way), Singing in the Rain (I know you haven't seen it), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

If you want to know the movies you have to see to get Flixist head here.
