By The window on spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home has passed, right? Well, let me give you a spoiler warning all the same. If you’ve yet to see the web-slinger’s latest adventure, don’t read this article. For those that have, you can continue on.
In a new interview with Variety, director Sam Raimi weighed in on his thoughts about Spider-Man’s latest MCU outing. “It was so much fun,” said the Spider-Man director. “I love No Way Home and the audience I was with went crazy. It was delightful to watch Alfred play his role, and Willem Dafoe, just seeing these guys take it to the next level. And Tobey was awesome as always. The best word I can say is it was refreshing for me.”
One of the best surprises in Tom Holland’s third film was the inclusion of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective live-action Spider-Men. Not only did fans get to see one last performance from their favorite villains, but their personal wall crawlers, too. It even provided some closure on lingering plot threads from the old films, wrapping things up nicely for everyone involved.
Why was Variety talking to Raimi about Spider-Man: No Way Home, though? For those somehow still unaware, Raimi is directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Returning to a Marvel property after 15 years, it made sense to ask what he thought of Sony utilizing iterations of characters he first drafted.
As for the fate of Doctor Strange, Raimi said, “I wish I knew the answer to that question.” It was reported back in November that the latest Strange outing had undergone significant reshoots. No one is exactly sure that the film is complete, least of all its director. “I think we’re done,” Raimi elaborated, “but we just cut everything. We’re just starting to test the picture and we’ll find out if there’s anything that’s got to be picked up.” Raimi stressed that Marvel doesn’t stop, saying the studio will push until as close as possible to ensure each film is as polished as can be.
“Marvel’s been a great team to work with. I think that was a not-surprising surprise,” Raimi said. ” I’ve been super-supported by the whole Marvel operations, starting at the top with Kevin Feige, and working all the way down to the crews that they work with.” That doesn’t necessarily mean Doctor Strange won’t see a delay, but at least everyone involved is happy.
