By I’m kind of in awe of the brand new Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers teaser trailer. While I wasn’t even aware that a live-action version of the animated show was being made, I also didn’t expect a potential movie to be a completely self-aware parody of not only itself but the idea of making 3D animated versions of previously hand-drawn cartoons. This is a legitimate movie, right? Disney isn’t pulling a fast one, right?
Made in conjunction with The Lonely Island (which is a name I haven’t heard in quite some time), the trailer makes it very clear that this isn’t meant for children. With “Best Friend” as the backing track, I honestly don’t know what the hell world we’re living in anymore. Is Disney really making a potential R-rated film?
On the flip side to this positivity is that a lot of the Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers trailer is loaded with meaningless nostalgia. It’s really cool to see Roger Rabbit get a shoutout in 2022, but then the smattering of other animated properties in most scenes (My Little Pony, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wreck-It Ralph) recalls Ready Player One. That doesn’t instill much confidence in me, but then seeing the two chipmunks get placed into a more adult-friendly atmosphere is kind of exciting. I mean, we’re getting a 2D/3D/live-action hybrid film in the vein of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It honestly looks fantastic.
I’m not sure what will come of this film, but Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers premieres on Disney+ May 20, 2022. Despite my misgivings, I’ll definitely be watching this one.
