By If you thought film delays from the coronavirus pandemic would be a thing of the past in 2022, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. Sony has announced this evening that the upcoming animated feature Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will be delayed from its late 2022 release into summer 2023. Set now for June 2, 2023, this delay ends up knocking the second part of this massive sequel into 2024. Fans will be able to finish the story on March 29, 2024.
As well as kicking Spidey into the multiverse for an extended hibernation, Sony has shifted around its release schedule for the next few years. The animated film Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile from Josh Gordon and Will Speck has been moved up from November 2022 to October 7, 2022. The Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web is now on for July 7, 2023. We’re also apparently getting a sequel to The Equalizer 2 aptly titled The Equalizer 3 on September 1, 2023.
It’s a bit much to take in so late at night, but there is likely a good reason for delaying Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse so much. I honestly doubt it is solely due to COVID-19 and probably more to budget and time constraints. It could also be that Madame Web slots in between the two-parter, meaning we may see characters appear in Part Two.
Whatever the case, I’m disappointed that we’ll need to wait longer for the sequel to the best Spider-Man film.
