Barbenheimer continues to reign supreme at the box office in its second weekend

If Disney thought that its latest take on the Haunted Mansion would topple the phenomenon known as Barbenheimer this weekend, then it was sorely mistaken. Despite a couple of new films releasing this weekend and the majority of business already being done for both summer tentpoles, Barbie and Oppenheimer continued to reign supreme at the box office this weekend. The one-two punch of existential dread and supreme guilt kept its grip on first and second place, relegating everything else to fight for the scraps below.

With Barbie having opened to a record-setting $162 million last weekend, you’d think the second weekend would be roughly half of that. Instead, the film only dropped 43%, bringing in another $93 million and raising its domestic gross to around $351 million. Oppenheimer, as well, didn’t have a stark drop-off and only fell about 44% to rake in another $46.2 million. That gives director Christopher Nolan the honor of having the lowest second-weekend decrease for an R-rated summer film ever.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion opened to a third-place finish, but it only managed $24.2 million domestically. Internationally, it did even worse to the tune of roughly $9 million, which is a serious blow for a film that cost around $150 million. This is yet another in a string of misses for Disney this summer, though both The Little Mermaid and Elemental have somehow managed to become profitable despite dismal starts.

In fourth comes the controversial film Sound of Freedom, which is using its potentially astroturfed revenue to keep it ahead of most of the competition. The film brought in another $12.4 million, though no one can be certain if people are actually seeing the film. Rounding out the top five is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, grabbing another $10.7 million while seemingly failing to catch up to the Barbenheimer craze. It’s unlikely to finish its theatrical run a dud, but it’s also a rather disappointing turnout for one of the most expensive films ever.
