By Despite a brand new Martin Scorsese film hitting theaters this weekend, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film remained number one on the charts. After opening to a little under $100 million domestically, Swifties returned for seconds this week to the tune of an extra $31 million in revenue. Much like last week, the film broke another record for being the only concert film with two consecutive number-one weekends.
As for Scorsese’s latest, the numbers aren’t big but they don’t quite tell the full story. Killers of the Flower Moon is an Apple TV+ original film that the distributor is giving a limited theatrical run. With the film running just a bit over three and a half hours long, it’s astonishing that it even made $23 million domestically. It now sits as the third-best debut for the director.
Apple isn’t yet talking about when the film will hit its streaming service, but everything looks promising with regards to gross so far. 44% of ticket buyers were under 30 years old and reviews have been generally exceptional. The film may not end its run recovering its $200 million budget, but plenty of people are sure to sign up for Apple TV+ once it becomes available there.
As for the rest of the top 10, there isn’t much to say. The usual suspects from the last few weeks all return and many of them were bested by a 30th-anniversary re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas. I love that movie, but I’m honestly surprised it managed to pull $4.1 million. I guess people just really love the big-screen experience, especially when it comes to Taylor Swift.
