Knightley replaces Cotillard in Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis

David Cronenberg has lost a leading lady. The French actress Marion Cotillard has become increasingly sought after, ever since her breakthrough performance in 2007’s La Vie en Rose earned her an Academy Award. Having showed her staying power in films such as Michael Mann’s Public Enemies and her pension for mind-bending realities in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, the actress was in fine form to star in David Cronenberg’s next film, Cosmopolis, based on the Don DeLillo novel. However, it is her form — a burgeoning baby bump — that is now preventing Cotillard from moving forward with the production.

Keira Knightley has reportedly stepped in to replace Cotillard in the role of Mrs. Parker, the wife of billionaire protagonist Eric Parker, who will be played by Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson. The French actress Marion Cotillard has become increasingly sought after, ever since her breakthrough performance in 2007's La Vie en Rose earned her an Academy Award. Being a fan of Knightley, I am happy to see her move back into more mainstream* films, having lost her to independent fare like Never Let Me Go and London Boulevard. I am already very interested in A Dangerous Method because of the subject matter and Cronenberg's direction; the addition of Knightley to the Cosmopolis project will keep it firmly locked on my radar as well.

*Ok, Cronenberg is hardly mainstream BUT Eastern Promises and A History of Violence were real game changers for the Canadian director.
