By Real Steel is kind of like a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie. Hugh Jackman plays a washed-up boxer who, on the verge of becoming champion, gets replaced by boxing robots. Honestly, nothing gets better than robots, so he shouldn’t feel so bitter towards them. Faced with building debt, he and his son, Max (Dakota Goyo) enter the robot boxing business.
While it may look like fodder for a family film, I just can’t get over the fact that there are robots boxing. DreamWorks tapped into the lost art of animatronics, utilizing 19 of the suckers for scenes with human actors. For the fight scenes themselves, motion capture was used with guidance by former champion, Sugar Ray Leonard. Granted, he’s no Manny Pacquiao, but he used to be at the top.
