Super 8 “won” this weekend’s box office with a $37m weekend pull ($38m if you include Thursday’s sneak previews). While the number seems fairly modest for a summer blockbuster, you have to keep in mind that there wasn’t too much of a marketing/publicity push until last week’s media blitz of free advanced screenings and early Thursday release. Also, in a summer crowded with superhero films, franchise sequels, and big name actors attached to such films, it’s hard for a movie like Super 8 to attract a general audience.
It just goes to show how well a film can do through word of mouth. Then again, Super 8 is an amazing movie that would have brought in curious minds due to the J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg credits.
