By So, the last bit of news we got on Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake, hereby renamed as Old Boy, was that Christian Bale might be taking the role of the villain. Now that news is to be superseded by the news that Josh Brolin will be taking the part of the hero, who will now on be referred to as Joe (originally named Dae-su Oh). The story goes that “on the day his daughter is born, Joe is captured and imprisoned in a hotel room for over two decades (15 years in the original) with no understanding as to why. When he is suddenly released, he’s told that he has just four days to determine the reason for his imprisonment and, if he cannot, his daughter will be killed.” Noodle-slurping ensues.
It’s hard for me to accept Josh Brolin as a hero figure in any film, so it’s even more difficult for him to evoke some semblance of pity from me. He always seemed like the stab-you-in-the-back-if-you-don’t-stab-him-first kind of character actor to me, which would be more in line with the villain’s persona in the story (hence the header image). Whether or not Bale will still play the villain is unsure at this point, but if I had my way, I’d switch the roles. Old Boy is set to commence production in early 2012.
