There may be a Woody Woodpecker movie for some reason

Because nobody asked for it, it looks like a Woody Woodpecker movie is in development at Universal’s Illumination Entertainment. Illumination is the brains behind Despicable Me and the upcoming adaptation of The Lorax, so hopefully we won’t be in for a stinkburger the likes of Alvin and the Chipmunks or The Smurfs. (Then again, those stinkburger film franchises have grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. So, hell, what do I know?) John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky (King of the Hill, Blades of Glory) are being courted to do the screenplay. No word on an Andy Panda cameo.

I watched quite a few cartoons growing up, and I was never a big fan of Woody Woodpecker. Didn’t mind him or his iconic laugh (though I would probably mind that laugh a lot in a feature-length film), but he never really measured up to the Warner Brothers, Disney, or Hanna-Barbera toons.

Still, a potential bajillion dollars, right? Fortune and glory, kid — fortune and glory.
