By Back in 1995, Martin Scorsese released A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, a four-hour documentary/love letter to the films he grew up watching. Somewhere between all the other things he’s working on, Scorsese is making a new documentary on British cinema with Michael Henry Wilson and Thelma Schoonmaker.
The latest journey through film has been in the works for a bit. Back in 2009, Scorsese said, “As soon as we finish mixing Shutter Island, which will be in August, Thelma and I are going to go back and take up where we were in the British documentary and hopefully construct a rough cut by the time I shoot my next picture.”
The Film Stage notes that Scorsese has intimate ties to British cinema. He was a close friend of Michael Powell, and even introduced Powell to Schoonmaker. (The two married and remained together until Powell’s death in 1990.) On November 18th, Scorsese introduced a screening of the Powell/Pressburger film The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp at Film Forum. (I couldn’t make it, sadly.) He and Schoonmaker supervised the film’s restoration. The new print of Colonel Blimp is playing until Thursday, December 1st.
