The news 20th Century Fox wanted us to see was that production president Emma Watts will be keeping her job through at least 2015. This was important because she has made a point of getting talented directors attached to Fox’s films and keeping them coming back for new projects.
But what’s more important is that in the process of announcing this news, Fox has confirmed that it has just made a deal with Matthew Vaughn for him to direct a sequel to X-Men: First Class. Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand) is writing the script and X-Men vet Brian Singer will return as producer. The cast of the first film will also be returning, which is good news for those of us who get so annoyed they can’t look past it if a new actor is cast — I’m looking at you, Don Cheadle as War Machine.
We knew that Vaughn was interested in making X-Men: First Class a new trilogy (because what isn’t these days?), and it seems like Fox will give him that chance. Fox also wants to prioritize a sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, bringing back director Rupert Wyatt.
So what are we callings this next movie, X-Men: First Class 2? X-Men: Second Class? X-Men: It’s Another Sequel? When you take into account the original trilogy and its differing continuity from First Class, the Wolverine spin-offs, the still-in-production Deadpool, this all seems pretty confusing to anyone who wants to get into the franchise.
