Before you get too excited — No, this is not a remake of George A. Romero’s classic film Day of the Dead. There was already a remake of that starring Nick Cannon, and it was AWFUL.
Reel FX has announced that they are working with Guillermo Del Toro on a CG animated feature titled Day of the Dead (a working title as the press release indicates). Described as a “Romeo and Juliet style love story set against a Mexican Day of the Dead backdrop”, Del Toro will act as producer of the project, working alongside writer/director Jorge R. Gutierrez. Little else is known other than it’s aiming for a Fall 2014 release.
Though it may become a shock to some of you, I am not in fact Mexican. I realize that “Hispanic” and “Mexican” are hard to differentiate, but as it turns out they’re not the same thing. That being said, I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with the Mexican tradition and am psyched at the prospect of Del Toro being involved in a Dia de Muertos centric film. I only hope that Del Toro or Gutierrez somehow played the Lucas Arts classic Grim Fandango and draws inspiration from it (seriously, that game was ‘effin awesome).
