While there’s never a shortage of reasons to get excited for a new Quentin Tarantino film, the above screenshot has perked my ears for Django Unchained in a way they hadn’t been before. One of two released this morning, it shows Leonardo DiCaprio as pugilistic plantation profiteer Calvin Candie. The thought of seeing DiCaprio as an extravagantly written Tarantino villain has me more interested in this than any of the far more earnest roles he’s played in recent memory.
The other picture shows stars Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, who won Best Supporting Actor for Inglourious Basterds. The two play freed slave, Django, and his mentor in bounty hunting, Dr. King Schultz, respectively. The cast also includes Kerry Washington, Sacha Baron Cohen, and the always frisson-inducing Samuel L. Jackson. Django Unchained releases December 25 this year.
