By There are some things the military can’t tolerate, and guys in skintight suits are one of them. The US Military, which often works with films to show the armed forces in a good light, has backed away from the Avengers for a not-very-convincing reason:
Says Phil Strub, the Defense Department’s Hollywood liaison, “We couldn’t reconcile the unreality of this international organization and our place in it. To whom did S.H.I.E.L.D. answer? Did we work for S.H.I.E.L.D.? We hit that roadblock and decided we couldn’t do anything [with the film].”
So apparently the military was concerned that S.H.I.E.L.D. not being real or having a defined place in the defense industry was a problem, and it didn’t want to seem unrealistic. This is not that convincing because I don’t remember ever seeing a realistic action movie. Especially a realistic action movie with a lots of tanks, fighter planes, and explosions. I’ll bet the real reason is that they’re just too busy watching Watchmen.
