By So much for being one of my most anticipated movies of 2012. Alfonso Cuarón’s latest film, Gravity, has been pushed back to next year. The George Clooney/Sandra Bullock movie was originally set for a November release, but Warner Bros. now lists the film as “unscheduled 2013.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean bad things for Gravity. We reported earlier that the opening shot of Gravity is 17-minutes long, and there are many visual effects in addition to long takes. There are only 156 shots in Gravity, which means an average shot length of 46 to 47 seconds. The average shot length today is roughly 4 to 6 seconds. (Gravity isn’t in Béla Tarr territory, sure, but it’s still amazing for a major studio film.) As The Playlist notes, this delay could be a chance for Cuarón and company to take their time to do all of the effects right rather than rush the movie out the door.
In other scheduling news, Gangster Squad has been given a September 7th release, moved up from its original date in October. In other words, we’ll learn if old gangsters have nards a little bit sooner.
