By This is crazy. I was just extolling the virtues of John Woo’s classic The Killer, possibly the director’s second-best Hong Kong film, which puts it in the running for one of the top ten best action movies of all time. There have been rumblings of an English-language remake of the film set in Los Angeles since February 2011, but it looks like the film may finally come to its terrible fruition, as it’s just obtained funding and director John H. Lee intends to begin shooting later this year. At present, only Sarah Yan Li has been cast as the female lead, and there’s as yet no word on who may play the Americanized version of Chow Yun-Fat’s titular role.
For those that didn’t hear me bleating about it last week on the Flixist Show, The Killer is about a great assassin who, after accidentally blinding her with the muzzle flash of his gun, falls in love with a witness to his last hit. It’s also got one of the bleakest endings to an action movie that I’ve ever seen. It’s not Oldboy-level disturbing, but it’s just dark. Like a black bear attacking a black forest campground at midnight, but with less of a whimsical reference.
