By When I was a kid there were two things that were the funniest thing in the universe. The first was people getting hit in the balls. I loved slapstick. The second was ALF. That furry brown alien slew me every time. Looking back on it (and having watched some episodes recently) “Ha! I kill me.” wasn’t actually that great a line and the show was just OK. Child me put a lot of comedy weight on the fact that a puppet was involved I think.
With 80s nostalgia all the rage these days ALF creator Paul Fusco, who has been trying to get ALF relaunched in one way or another for a few years, is about to pitch ALF as a feature film. Speaking to THR he said that he’ll be pitching a concept he’s worked on for the past few years to a major studio in the next few weeks. If they greenlight it Fusco says the story would be different, “ALF could be more outspoken now than ever, because the world is a whole different place than the ’80s. And I think the character still stands up and certainly has more to say now than ever … I don’t think we would duplicate the TV show, but I think we would maybe put it in a storyline where we would explain how ALF got here and put him with a new family and let the character speak for himself.”
Obviously a greenlight from a studio is a long, long way from the film getting made, but while Fusco is clearly confident it’s harder for me to be. Much of what was endearing about ALF was the camp, and I don’t know if I agree with the fact that the character is still relevant. TV and film have come a long way since ALF cracked wise.
