The forthcoming CBGB movie has just cast Ashley Greene as its lead. Greene joins several others who have already been cast, including Alan Rickman as club founder Hilly Kristal, Malin Ackerman as Debbie Harry, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins as Iggy Pop, and Mickey Sumner (daughter of Sting) as Patti Smith.
Rather than a rock luminary or a downtown scenester, Ashley Greene will play Lisa Kristal, the daughter of Hilly Kristal. Lisa Kristal is also co-producer on the film and controls her father’s estate. Cinema Blend describes Greene’s role as follows:
…”a fiery young woman who frequently clashes with her father,” during her younger years. At some point, she ends up working as the business manager of the club and later attends law school in an effort to help keep the place running.
Part of this news has me a bit worried, maybe needlessly so. If the film focuses more on the father-daughter relationship, the whole downtown art and music scene aspect of the film may get lost. The CBGB movie probably won’t be the NYC cousin to Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People, but director Randall Miller and co-writer Jody Savin might still have something potent on their hands.
The CBGB movie starts filming in un-NYC-like Savannah, Georgia later this month; and no one’s been cast to play Television yet.
