By This is some of the best news you’re going to read today. A digitally restored, 4K version of the director’s cut of Lawrence of Arabia may be coming to a theater near you. You may have heard that this new version premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to unsurprisingly-rave reviews. That cut is premiering in the US tonight at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, something I’d probably kill to be able to go to, and it will be releasing in select theaters on October 4th, with a Blu-ray release to follow November 13th as well as a November 16th broadcast on Turner Classic Movies.
No word on whether or not the version in theaters will be playing in 70MM anywhere (because seeing Lawrence of Arabia in 70MM is a cinematic bucket list item for me), but this is still likely to be one of your few chances to see this classic on the big screen in the best quality its ever seen. As soon as a more complete list of theaters is available, I’ll be damn sure to post it here, but I would say it’s a safe bet to say it’ll come to a handful or larger markets, like New York and Los Angeles and maybe Washington D.C.
