From Up on Poppy Hill is the newest full length movie to come out of Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli. Based on a manga by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsurō Sayama, Poppy Hill‘s screenplay was adapted by Ghibli mega-star Hayao Miyazaki, and directed by his son, Goro Miyazaki. The only other Ghibli movie made by Goro Miyazaki is the fan-polarizing Tales from the Earthsea, so it will be interesting to see how From Up on Poppy Hill fares.
The storyline follows a young girl named Umi, who finds herself in a tumultuous relationship with a boy named Shun, and things get incesty when they realize that they might have the same father. Personally, this type of real-world-drama Ghibli movie doesn’t interest me as much as the studio’s older tendencies for fantastical exaggeration and exploration of traditional Japanese myths and beliefs, but hey, at least it has incest. I guess that’s something.
