By Last December we got our first look at The Impossible, starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. The sophomore effort from Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), The Impossible tells the true story of a family trying to survive during the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. It’s been in post-production since February 2011, but a new trailer just arrived. The tsunami scenes look absolutely devastating, and it appears that the film will also focus on the way the human spirit endures in the face of tragedy.
While there’s some remarkable imagery and there’s something undeniably moving about that cover of U2’s “One,” the trailer unfortunately goes full Castaway and spoils the ending. If you want to avoid the spoilers but get the feel, just watch up until the 2:00 mark and turn it off. Just know that the tagline is “Nothing is more powerful than the human spirit.”
In the gallery are two stills from The Impossible. The film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and then arrive in theaters on December 21st.
