By Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are the fun guys of Hollywood. They wrote Zombieland, G.I. Joe Retaliation, they’re working on both the Deadpool feature and adapting Cowboy Ninja Viking, and it looks like they’ve also recently finished a screenplay that the big studios are reportedly going ga-ga for. The script is titled Epsilon, and it’s about the aftermath of a robot apocalypse that turns out to not be quite so apocalyptic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film “is set after an initial robot rebellion ended in failure and Earth operates on almost no electronics. The remaining robots seek refuge on a space station and begin to raise their own human lab rats, which they train to act as their agents. The main character is a man who discovers he is more human than he thought.” So, it’s like the inverse of The Matrix with some Battlestar Galactica thrown in for good measure. Count me in!
Word is Sony snatched up the project in the ballpark of $1 million, so good looks for Reese and Wernick. A source that has supposedly read the script has gone on to describe the project as “ambitious.” That’s some broad terminology, but hopefully it means we’re in for some epic sci-fi action. What I want to know is if the film is going to be serious, or if it’s going to head in the direction of the duo’s other work and be more ‘tongue in cheek’ fare. Hopefully we’ll know sooner than later.
