By There is no shortage of love around Flixist for the brilliant Chan-wook Park. A master of his craft, he has directed several amazing films, most notably Oldboy, and has established a pedigree of Korean film making that is rarely matched, regardless of the country of origin. Of course a man of such tremendous talent knows not the boundaries of nations, and it looks like he has been attached to helm yet another English language film titled Corsica 72. That makes three, with Stoker having just wrapped and The Brigands of Rattleborge still in pre-production. It looks like Corsica is what the director will be working on while Rattleborge comes together, with both films originating from Black List screenplays. The man knows quality when he sees it.
Corsica 72 is written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the scribes of the last five Bond films, and we have been graciously gifted with some plot details: “on the island of Corsica in 1972, childhood best friends Marco and Sauveur find their lives veering in opposite directions – the first towards the Mafia, the second toward a simpler life with his beloved, Lucia. When the Corsican mob kills Sauveur’s brother, they ignite a tit-for-tat blood feud that inevitably leads toward a final showdown.” It all sounds so deliciously dramatic!
As far as I’m concerned, this is a man who can do no wrong. I’m curious as to what the tone of his English films will be, what with his Korean works maintaining healthy infusions of humor throughout their epic and often violent tales, but I have no doubt that they’re going to be unique regardless. As an already world renowned director, I can only assume that broadening his audience by producing films in another language is going to make this man even more legendary than he already is. Truly it is most deserved.
