By I suppose the laws of probability would dictate that out of the million or so projects Guillermo Del Toro has on his plate at any given time, at least a couple aren’t going to come to fruition. That doesn’t excuse how depressing it is, though, especially considering how special this particular film was looking. Del Toro’s stop motion animated collaboration with the Jim Henson company looks like it has had the brakes officially put on it. Co-writer Gris Grimly recently tweeted:
Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick.
He puts the blame at the feet of the studio and the floundering box office reception of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie.
There are people like us out there. But they look at numbers. Frankenweenie was a box office failure to them.
It’s a sad but true fact that studios, even adventurous studios, aren’t exactly eager to throw their money into endeavors that were already risky in the first place, let alone with a recent “failure” still fresh in everyone’s minds. The good news is that Grimly has already moved onto his next project, adapting Little Jordan Ray’s Muddy Spud. It’s Del Toro that I’m worried about. What ever will he do now?
