Kevin Smith considers Clerks sequel book rather than film

Kevin Smith has been mulling a Clerks sequel for a bit. At the end of 2012, it seemed like the only missing piece was Jeff Anderson (Randall) signing on. But then the project kept morphing, from a film, to a web series, to a Broadway show, and now a book.

As teased on the online chat show What’s Trending, Smith may pen an episodic sequel to Clerks. Released chapter by chapter, Clerks III would stress “audience interactivity” to help form the content. (Smith characterized himself as a “new media artist.”) What would go into Clerks III exactly? Smith said that a book would allow him to:

…go inside the characters’ heads, tell Year One origin stories where the first chapter is Dante and Randall meeting in kindergarten, all the stuff I can’t do in a movie.

A lot of us said our piece about Smith last year during Kevin Smith Week. (It included a piece on Mallrats, a piece on lifelong Kevin Smith fandom, a piece on Jersey Girl, and a piece on Zack & Miri Make a Porno.) As for this book idea, he’ll probably abandon it in a month.
