Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk has been set to do the sci-fi film Passengers starring Keanu Reeves. Kirk has helmed episodes of both Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, and now he is making his feature directorial debut. He was the frontrunner for directing Thor 2, but that was handed off to fellow Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor.
The rough story is that it takes place on a spacecraft that is carrying thousands of people to a distant colony. Some sort of malfunction with one of the sleeping chambers causes a single passenger (assumingly Reeves) to wake up 90 years before everyone else. Afraid of growing old and dying alone, he wakes up another passenger to accompany him. Also it is apparently a love story.
Passengers’s script was done by Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts and now finally has a director attached to it. This film has been in development hell for the past few years with directors coming and going, but nothing getting off the ground. Hopefully production for this will start soon.
