Over the weekend there was a box office bout that pit Guillermo Del Toro and the fightin’ robots of Pacific Rim against the unfunny, lazy, talentless hack Adam Sandler and his abominable sequel Grown Ups 2. In the end, both movies lost out to Despicable Me 2, with Grown Ups 2 in second place and Pacific Rim in a disappointing third. That makes Pacific Rim this week’s Lone Ranger (which was last week’s White House Down).
I have no idea what this undrperformance means for Del Toro’s future projects apart from strict budget caps. Pacific Rim can maybe recoup domestic shortfalls overseas, where it’s already made around $53 million. (Box Office Mojo estimated the a global opening weekend at $91.3 million.) The movie is set to open in China on July 31st and in Japan on August 9th.
Since so many people went to see Grown Ups 2 over the weekend, it seems to confirm the sci-fi movie cliche: we were the real monsters all along. In conclusion, we deserve to be punched in the face by robots.
Rounding out the top five were The Heat and The Lone Ranger. Full numbers after the cut.
