Pacific Rim opens well in China, sequel more likely

While Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim has been a bit of a bust at the box office domestically, it’s been doing quite well overseas. In fact, Pacific Rim had a record-setting opening day in China on Wednesday, grossing $9 million. This is Warner Bros.’s biggest open in China and could mean a sequel if it continues to perform well internationally.

We reported on the potential sequel to Pacific Rim last year, which would again be co-written by Del Toro and Travis Beacham. There’s a lot going on in that world to explore, so it’s just a matter of the money being there.

One really good thing for Pacific Rim: the movie doesn’t even open in Japan until August 9th. If Japan does similar business in its opening week as China (And why wouldn’t it? That’s Gojira and giant robot country!), there may be hope for them ding-dang big robots yet.

Keep your eyes overseas.
