By The Lone Ranger is a box office flop that will lose Disney a lot of money. According to Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the reason the movie flopped wasn’t its tonal shifts, poor screenplay, problematic depictions of Native Americas, or the fact that audiences had no interest in a f**king Lone Ranger movie. No, the reason was film critics. (I suppose to be fair, everyone’s a critic these days.)
Depp said that following in a recent interview: “I think the reviews were written seven to eight months before we released the film.” Co-star Armie Hammer echoed Depp. “This is the deal with American critics: they’ve been gunning for our movie since it was shut down the first time,” Hammer said. He added, “They tried to do the same thing with to World War Z, it didn’t work, the movie was successful. Instead they decided to slit the jugular of our movie.”
Bruckheimer believes that The Lone Ranger will be vindicated by history. “It’s unfortunate because the movie is a terrific movie,” he said. “It’s a great epic film. It has lots of humor. It’s one of those movies that whatever critics missed in it this time, they’ll review it in a few years and see that they made a mistake.”
As of press time, the makers of Transformers, Twilight, The Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, or any of Adam Sandler’s movies were unavailable for comment.
