By Scheduled to release June 2014, the sequel to the surprisingly hilarious 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, is now in full on production with additional cast and plot details. First off, everyone’s coming back with Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and standout Ice Cube set to return. Additionally, Jonah Hill gets a (new?) love interest as Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) take their whole “undercover cops pretending to be children” thing to college.
According to The Wrap, the sequel’s plot is basically the same as the first:
22 Jump Street follows officers Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) as they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. In addition to cracking the case, the two freshmen must figure out if they can have a mature relationship like real men.
So in place of the role reversal hilarity of the first film, we get the natural ones. Sure a plot synopsis isn’t a good gauge of a comedy, but I still have doubts since the basic framework is the same. But if the character building is anything like it was in 21 Jump Street, maybe going down the same road twice won’t be so bad?
