By The trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street makes the movie look like an energetic exploration of the amoral douchebag culture in stock trading and corporate banking. This adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s memoir seems like a sure hit for Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, which is why Paramount positioned its release for November 15th, just in time to be taken seriously for awards season.
According to Kristopher Tapley at HitFix, we might not be seeing The Wolf until December, and perhaps not until 2014. It appears that Paramount execs have yet to see the film, and Scorsese is hurriedly cutting the movie so that it’s a reasonable length and to avoid an NC-17 rating. There’s also some concern about its chances at the Oscars given all the hype over Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave. Over at The Dissolve, Matt Singer says it’s 10:1 odds that The Wolf gets bumped to December, and 6:1 odds that The Wolf won’t be out until next year.
Alec and I have heard speculation that The Wolf of Wall Street will be the secret screening at this year’s New York Film Festival. We won’t find out until a little later if that’s true, and if so, what sort of cut of the film would be screened. (Whatever the secret movie winds up being, hopefully Alec or I get tickets to it. Last year’s secret screening was Lincoln.)
