First look at Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes in Mr. Holmes

It isn’t too often that casting is more perfect than anything could possibly be, but in the case of Ian McKellen as an older Sherlock Holmes I’m pretty sure it is. Can’t you just see Benedict Cumberbatch growing up to look just like the guy in this picture?

If course the movie has nothing to do with the show. Director Bill Condon is telling a story of a retired Holmes haunted by a cold case from his past. Worryingly the plot also involves his housekeeper’s amateur sleuth son, which starts sounding a bit to sidekicky for me. Still, McKellan looks quite dashing in the film, which is now titled Mr. Holmes, a change from the previous A Slight Trick of the Mind.
