The Interview has traveled down quite the rocky road, but it looks like its troubled journey is now over.
After announcing that the film would hit roughly 200 screens on Christmas Day, rumors began circulating that Sony was still shopping around for a way to release the film digitally. The first rumored outlet, Crackle, was never really an option – there’s no way that Sony would’ve allowed the film to release for free. The second outlet, iTunes, was decided against because Apple apparently didn’t want to fast track the release.
Finally, Sony found a home for The Interview – YouTube. YouTube will begin offering rentals of The Interview at 1 p.m. est, or about 40 minutes from now. The Interview will also be available on both Google Play and Xbox Video, presumably at the same time as the YouTube rental.
Interestingly, no mention was made of the film being available on Sony’s own Playstation Network. That could be because the PSN usually has one weekly update on Tuesday evenings, so it may show up there next week.
Regardless, if you were looking to check out The Interview over the holiday season, you’re out of excuses. The film is rumored to cost $5.99 to rent or $14.99 to own.
Update: The film is now live and can be seen on YouTube, Google Play, and Xbox Video. Curiously, Xbox Video is only offering the film in SD.
