I’ll defend last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles far more than most. To me, that’s a perhaps unintentionally subversive movie about what happens when you focus a Michael Bay movie around the woman as the lead. She’s consistently objectified, every single character keeps throwing unwanted advances in her direction, and no one takes her seriously. But because we see the film from her perspective, suddenly the grossness of all these actions ceases to be invisible, turning the film into one with a nice message that men should probably shut up from time to time. I mean, Will Arnett plays a fedora wearing nice guy old enough to be April’s Dad!
I’ve no idea how much of that was intentional and how much was accidental, but the film made so much money that we’re gonna find out soon if they manage to keep it up in the sequel. In addition to Bebop, Rocksteady and Casey Jones, it’s going to include Baxter Stockman, pretty much rounding off the crew of TMNT regular characters.
Fresh off his scene stealing turn in Gone Girl, Tyler Perry has been chosen to play Baxter in the sequel, which is pretty much perfect casting if you ask me. Now all they need to do is, well, hire someone half way competent to write the script and I’ll be ready to start looking forward to this one.
