By Just released on DVD and Blu-ray, Mad Max: Fury Road is one of our favorite movies of the year and it’s better than many other movies. Somehow Fury Road also manages to fit as a badass addition to the loose thematic continuity of George Miller’s Mad Max series.
And now Fury Road is officially the best.
The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) picked Miller’s latest Mad Max entry as the best film of the last year, garnering more votes than high-profile international fare such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s The Assassin (winner of Best Director at Cannes), Laszlo Nemes’ Son of Saul, and Jafar Panahi’s Taxi (winner of the Golden Bear prize at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival). The 493 international critics of FIPRESCI were allowed to vote for any film that premiered after July 1, 2014.
A special screening of Mad Max: Fury Road will take place at the San Sebastian Film Festival later this month, with Miller receiving a Grand Prix for his achievement. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, other Grand Prix recipients include Michael Haneke, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jean-Luc Godard, and Pedro Almodovar.
Thinking about my own personal best-of for 2015, I actually have Mad Max: Fury Road just behind Joshua Oppenheimer’s documentary The Look of Silence as my movie of the year, but I’m more than pleased with the FIPRESCI’s decision. It’s great to see Miller given his due after toiling so long to get this movie made.
