By I’ve never actually read The Little Prince, but I know fans keep their memories of the 1943 French novella in the warm places of their hearts.
Despite a stellar cast comprised of Jeff Bridges (The Giver), Paul Rudd (Captain America: Civil War), James Franco (Sausage Party), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Benicio del Toro (Star Wars: Episode VIII), Marian Cotillard (Assassin’s Creed), Paul Giamatti (Straight Outta Compton), Albert Brooks (The Simpsons), Ricky Gervais (The Office), a somewhat successful director in Mark Osborne (Kung Fu Panda), and a positive box office return overseas ($88m+ on a ~$78m budget), Paramount Pictures surprisingly dropped the film from its release schedule last week just short of today’s planned release with no official word.
As has been the case in recent years, Netflix donned its shining armor to save The Little Prince by picking up the film’s domestic distribution rights. There’s no word on when the film will premiere on the streaming service, but it can be assumed it won’t be until Netflix puts forth a full marketing campaign behind the release.
The Little Prince will now join a long list of original content released by Netflix that includes the Golden Globe-nominated Master of None, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, and today’s dual release of Pee-wee’s Big Holiday and Daredevil: Season 2.
