Two years ago we got word that a The Last of Us movie was in the works, and then nothing, but some rumors on casting and whispers of a table read. Many of us probably forgot about it, shrugging our shoulders as we replayed the remastered version and realized we didn’t really need a movie. It appears that we won’t be getting one anyway. Game director Neil Druckmann was asked by IGN about it and said:
“I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do. There hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.”
This doesn’t mean we’ll never see it, but it’s going to be a long, long wait if we do.
If you couldn’t tell I’m honestly not that heart broken about it. The Last of Us was so wonderfully told in videogame form I can’t see a movie doing it better or even well. It’s a slow burn that needs those hours and interactivity to unfold. Sometimes things just work better in their original medium and I think this is one of them.
