While little is known about Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis’ newest film, it’s still one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. Currently in production under the title Phantom Thread, the movie takes place in London’s fashion world during the 1950s. Some speculate that Day-Lewis will play a character inspired by real-life fashion figure Charles James.
While details are fuzzy and Anderson has yet to settle on an official title, the film now has a Christmas release date set in stone. Screen Crush suggests this will be a week-long award-qualifying run (i.e., Xmas in NYC and LA), followed by a nationwide rollout in January. A similar release strategy was used for Anderson’s adaptation of Inherent Vice as well as many other awards-season films (e.g., Martin Scorsese’s Silence).
Makes me wonder if this year’s New York Film Festival will host the world premiere of PTA and DDL’s new movie, assuming they get it done in time. We’ll have to wait until October to find out.
