Three years ago almost to the day Martin Lawrence announced that Bad Boys 3 was a thing, and that it was actually going to happen for real. Well, it turns out that it wasn’t so “for real,” and that, as with all other attempts to get the third film in the franchise going, this one has failed too. After losing its director and release date Lawrence told EW that the movie is probably not happening, a conclusion the rest of us had reached about ten seconds after he announced it.
“I don’t think we’re going to get one, not the way everything’s turning out,” Lawrence tells said. “Will is off doing another movie, and I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
Will (of Smith fame) is definitely busy as he just became the genie in the live action remake of Aladdin, but that doesn’t really explain the failure of this movie to routinely get off the ground. Could it be that no one is actually interested in seeing anymore Bad Boys films? I mean both actors are getting pretty old, and the brand of action and humor espoused by the first two films has kind of fallen by the wayside. Michael Bay, who directed both, was in his prime then, but now he’s just a mess, as is the action style he championed. The buddy cop movie may still live, but this franchise is pretty dead in terms of cultural relevancy.
Lawrence might be fully on board for a third movie, but I don’t think anyone else is.
