Jay and Silent Bob Reboot will begin filming this Fall

Kevin Smith has become a polarizing figure in recent years. The prolific director has crafted some excellent comedic films – Clerks, Dogma, Mallrats, Chasing Amy. The list goes on.

On the other hand, Smith has missed the mark with several films that have strayed into the horror genre. Titles like Tusk, Red State and, ugh, Yoga Hosers, have been met with tepid responses from fans and critics alike (though Smith certainly entertains his diehard fans with these flicks.) It’s for these reasons that todays news comes as a sigh of relief – but one that won’t last long.

Smith announced today via his Twitter that the upcoming Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is set to begin filming this fall. Jason Mewes will return as Jay, as he and Silent Bob attempt to shut down production on Bluntman Vs Chronic, a edgy reboot that pairs the friends superhero dopplegangers together on screen.

Unlike the cancelled sequels to Clerks 2 and Mallrats, this reboot seems like it will actually survive the pre-production phase. After all, these are Smith’s most recognizable characters, and a reboot featuring those familiar faces might be enough in this era of Hollywood that relies so heavily on brand-recognition. 

Funnily enough, it’s this current landscape that the upcoming sequel will be criticizing. Smith has described the film as, “a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business’s recent re-do obsession,” and we’re sure to get some jabs at the usual targets of Smith’s ire within the industry. 

While the quality of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is yet to be determined, I’m certain that Smith won’t hesitate to bring his A-game to this project. The director has struggled to create sequels within his ‘View Askewniverse’ and given this opportunity, I’ve no doubt that the films will satisfy fans of Smiths.
