At this point, it’s difficult to joke about how many DC movies Warner Bros. is green-lighting when there are so many damn movies they’re green-lighting. But here we go again, this time with what looks like to be another Harley Quinn-related movie. Per Deadline, newcomer indie director Cathy Yan is set to direct a movie focusing on an “untitled girl gang movie.”
Yan is coming out of a success from the most recent Sundance Film Festival, with her film Dead Pigs winning the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting. The project is reportedly based on comic series Birds of Prey, which teams Harley Quinn with crime fighters such as Batgirl, Black Canary and Huntress—however, none of these characters are confirmed to appear in this planned film. Yan follows Patty Jenkins as DC Films’s second female director, with a female screenwriter in Christina Hodson (the upcoming Bumblebee spin-off).
If this news is making you experience déjà vu, that is because mumbles for this project emerged around two years ago. And not only are we being graced with a Suicide Squad sequel, but there were talks of David Ayer making a Gotham City Sirens film with Robbie, in a premise that sounds similar to Yan’s project. But wait, there’s more! According to THR, the team behind Crazy Stupid Love is making a Harley Quinn and Joker movie starring Robbie and Jared Leto.
Prepare for that shrill call of “Mr. J!” to haunt your nightmares.
