Mandy, the second feature from director Panos Cosmatos, has just released its first trailer, and it is a spectacular showing of surreal horror and violence.
The plot takes place in 1983 and shows Red (Nicolas Cage) work to slaughter his way through an army of summoned monsters when a cult leader kidnaps his wife, Mandy (Andrea Riseborough). And it looks like it’ll be a nonstop nightmare. If the entire film can keep the same energy and imagery as this trailer, then Mandy might be the best Nicolas Cage movie since Wild at Heart.
Cosmatos’ first film, Beyond the Black Rainbow, was a beautifully otherworldly film, a haunting spectacle that stuck with me since I first saw it, and Mandy uses a lot of the same visual style with its neon fog and painted sets. I couldn’t be more excited for this.
And also that weapon Nicolas Cage forges! It’s like a combination of every bladed weapon ever made, and it kind of makes the chainsaw that shows up at the end look lame in comparison.
Mandy will release in theaters on September 14, 2018, and if you’re going to have trouble waiting to see it, then don’t worry. Nicolas Cage already has another movie where he rescues a loved one from a sadistic cult leader. I mean, of course he does. It’s called Drive Angry, and it’s super awesome in a different kind of way. What I’m saying is that he has sex with a woman while in the midst of a gunfight, and he drinks beer from a guy’s still-bloody skull. It’s a joy.
