By LeBron James is a generational talent, one that portends heated Twitter debates revolving around The Greatest of All Time. There’s no denying his skill and talent, and he’s been consistently great since the early stages of his career. Now at age 33, where players usually start declining noticeably, James is hoping to extend his NBA Finals appearance streak to nine (9!) next season with the Lakers.
Even in the midst of basketball greatness, James has his eyes and ears on matters both local and national beyond the basketball court. James – alongside many other NBA players – have spoken out against the current administration in the White House, even drawing the ire of the president just last week. Back in February, Fox News host Laura Ingraham told James – and by extension, all NBA players – to “shut up and dribble” when James and Golden State Forward Kevin Durant spoke out against Trump. This did not go over well, and now James is turning the narrative around.
Showtime announced they’ve picked a docu-series brought to them by James and partner Maverick Carter, aptly titled Shut Up and Dribble. The series is set to focus on the growing role of athletes beyond the sport they play in an ever-increasing social media and politically public arena. Over recent years, athletes have been emboldened to use their platform and brand to speak out against issues plaguing the United States landscape. Most notably has been former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the league is (poorly) attempting to find a happy medium as players still choose to kneel for the anthem.
James’s three-part series is set to air in October, just in time for the start of the new NBA season.
