A new trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake sets to detail the witches that bring pain and torment through the world, known as the Three Mothers. As the Mother of Sighs, Suspiriorum, Tilda Swinton exudes a sort of dangerous mysticism here, and I can’t wait to see more.
Outside of a few interesting shots of color and violence scattered through the trailer, though, it all comes across as a bit banal. You have a kid making creepy sketches of a witch that calls to her, discussions of ancient evil, shots of books, a girl levitating, and someone screaming at unknown forces. That’s more a comment on the paint-by-numbers nature of trailers than the movie itself, though.
Hopefully, if Suspiria does well for Amazon, we’ll get to see the other Mothers covered. I’d certainly enjoy a remake of Inferno, and I would love for someone to make a version of Mother of Tears that’s worth watching. But who knows? At two-and-a-half hours, Guadagnino may have boiled all three witches into one cauldron of unrelenting horror. Only time will tell.
Suspiria is set to reach limited theaters on October 26 and open nation wide on November 2.
