As an American, one of my favorite holidays is Thanksgiving. Maybe it has to do with all of the food, family, the end of fall, the obligatory new Disney movie released to theatres, or the yearly tradition of listening to “Alice’s Restaurant” twice a day while sipping hot apple cider. The point is, it’s a great holiday, but it’s also a holiday synonymous with Mystery Science Theater 3000. For diehard MST3K fans, you should know that the show originally debuted on Thanksgiving in 1988 on local access TV in Minneapolis. Because of that, fans of the series hold Turkey Day as a pretty special day.
Well it’s about to get even more special. Netflix has just announced that MST3K’s 12th season is going to be released this Thanksgiving, November 22nd, to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary. This season will have a reduced episode total from the 11th season, featuring only six episodes instead of fourteen. I’m okay with the reduced number of episodes since it’s never really about the number of episodes released, but rather the quality of them. It’s not that the 11th season was bad, but it only had a few episodes that were real standouts.
All of the cast from the 11th season will return, including Jonah Ray as Jonah, Felicia Day as Kinga Forrester, and Patton Oswalt as TV’s Son of TV’s Frank. Netflix has not announced which movies will be riffed on in each episode, but I guess that’s all part of the surprise.
