In some alternate universe, Thor Odinson and Valkyrie woke up to find that they were now battling alien creatures instead of comic book renditions of Norse mythological figures. As every Thor: Ragnarok fan and/or bisexual person on Twitter can tell you, Men in Black International stars the duo of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, bringing the madcap sci-fi series back in the spotlight.
This new film appears to be part reboot, part sequel, and part spin-off. Continuing from the first three movies starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith (with a painting of their agent characters making a brief appearance in this trailer), International goes across the Atlantic Ocean. Perhaps there’s a bit of Kingsman in here, being based in London and having the wacky gadgets MiB fans are accustomed to. Thompson plays a fresher, newly minted Agent M who partners up with the veteran Agent H (Hemsworth), with the plot revolving around an apparent mole in the organization.
It’s nice to see a bit of continuity, with Emma Thompson returning as Agent O from Men in Black 3, a movie I quite enjoyed to my surprise. New to the series is Liam Neeson as the head of the UK MiB branch—and I’ll be damned if this “mentor figure” doesn’t turn out to be the mole by the end of this.
The Men in Black film series isn’t one that I felt particular reverence to, so I couldn’t tell you if the trailer’s tone is “true to the series” or not. It seemed funny enough to me, and the fun weaponry and crazy alien designs are sure to delight. As perhaps the biggest MCU fan (this is undisputed), I appreciate the chemistry between Hemsworth and Thompson, and this duo alone is by far the only reason I desire to see this film.
Men in Black International hits theaters on June 14, 2019.
