Can you believe that there was a time that Angry Birds was the hottest game in the world? When the mobile scene was still fresh and young and wasn’t overcome by microtransations and pay-to-win mechanics, Angry Birds was the first real hit that legitimized mobile games for mainstream audiences. And I remember how people hated Angry Birds, saying that it wasn’t a real game or that if you played it you lost your “gamer card” or some garbage like that. Personally I’d take a million Angry Birds over any of today’s predatory mobile games.
It wasn’t all that much of a surprise then that Angry Birds got a movie adaptation in 2016. It also wasn’t a surprise when it turned out that The Angry Birds Movie was kind of terrible. It was the embodiment of a lazy animated kids movie that had dull jokes that kids would laugh at because a bunch of pigs farted and farts are funny to kids. I said it before and I’ll say it again, kids deserve better than just flashing colors and fart jokes. And don’t come back and say to me that kids should be able to enjoy whatever they want and I shouldn’t tell them what they can and can’t like. I’ve seen multiple kids get upset at the fact that I didn’t let them eat paint. Should I have let little Billy eat paint because he wanted to?
So, of course, The Angry Birds Movie was a huge hit at the box office, almost cementing that a sequel would be made. And… yup this sure does look like a sequel to The Angry Birds Movie. To be fair, there’s actually a clever joke with Zeta, the purple bird that hates the cold, floating on a chair in a pool, only for it be revealed that she’s just lying on a block of ice. That put a smirk on my face and I’ll give credit where credit is due. Other than that, Zeta just wants to go to some warm place and we cut to the birds and pigs marveling at Zeta’s giant block of ice. That’s about it. Plus there’s a naughty curse word thrown in, but it isn’t actually a naughty curse word! Aren’t these writers so clever with their puns???
