By Fans that have followed pre-release interviews of The Last Jedi should be familiar with the fact that actor Mark Hamill is very honest with his views on his role. He previously caused some confusion for fans when he initially said he, “had trouble accepting what Rian Johnson saw for Luke.” While that hardly was confirmation of him disliking the film, fans took to it as such.
In a new interview over on Den of Geek, Hamill seems to be stirring the pot again. In a press tour for his upcoming role in season two of Knightfall, Hamill got to talking about Star Wars again and his words are likely to get taken in the wrong fashion. “I just thought, Luke’s never going to see his best friend again,” Hamill stated. “You look at it in a self-centered way. I said that it was a big mistake that those three people would never reunite in any way…Luke, Han, and Leia will never be together again, and I’ll probably never get to work with Harrison again.”
Later on in the interview, Hamill claimed, “I’m sort of like a musician. I read the music, and I try to play it to the best of my ability. That doesn’t necessarily mean I like the tune, but that’s not my job.” He then went on to stress that he felt tricked since Luke only got one movie (ignoring that he has a role in Episode IX). “That’s what I was hoping when I came back: no cameos and a run-of-the-trilogy contract. Did I get any of those things? Because as far as I’m concerned, the end of VII is really the beginning of VIII. I got one movie! They totally hornswoggled me.”
Not being completely upset over the new trilogy, Hamill did explain that a lot of his concerns stem from being passionate about Star Wars as a whole. “I was once describing Star Wars fans, and I said, they’re passionate, they’re opinionated,” Hamill stressed, “and they feel a sense of ownership, because they’ve invested so much time in these characters and these stories, and I realized I was describing myself. It can get you into trouble because I don’t control the storylines.”
It’s really kind of hard to understand what Hamill meant with all of this. He likely is upset over some of the decisions that Disney has made with the franchise, but I sincerely doubt he would have agreed to appear in a film that he wasn’t pleased with. He’s just honest about all of his experiences, which likely means venting his frustrations when being pressed on the matter.
However you take it, though, Hamill clearly is invested in Star Wars. That, more than anything, shines through here.
